With summer setting in and the humidity reaching into the 90s in Sydney, I thought it was about time to try to recreate the pawpaw salad I had at the Rapid Creek markets (on recommendation from my dear friend Liz). I recently bought a julienne slicer (essential for this recipe, I think) and armed with a Darwin recipe from the wonderful Poh, came up with this.
Perfectly garlicky and hot, crunchy and sour, it was a very good first attempt and took me back to my last morning in Darwin in August. I might save my second attempt for a time when limes don't cost $29.99 a kilo! (I used lemon juice instead).
Hey Liz, if you're going to make it, I think you'll need either one of these: http://www.everten.com.au/borner-original-v-slicer-gift-box.html or one of these:http://www.spirithouse.com.au/shop/kitchen-stuff which seem not to be expensive. Poh's recipe is good - there are lots of others online (including Luke Nguyen) but Poh's appeared to be a proper Darwin one.
On the Christmas note: we are celebrating at my brother's house. His wife asked us to bring prawns, but I'm thinking that pawpaw salad plus prawns might be super delish.

Most impressive - and very wistfulness-inducing for me...can't wait to be back to my Sunday morning Rapid Ck Market run! As we're having a Darwin Xmas this year (which will be v rare with all our rellies 'Down South') I'm thinking home made Paw Paw Salad & barra may have to be on the menu...I'll go looking for Poh's recipe!!
