After spending hours on the (hot, sunny) weekend wrestling to get iTunes to talk to my new iPhone, I had an opportunity to revamp my playlists and include an extra special hot weather super summer playlist. I included as many songs as I could that included the words ‘sun’ or ‘summer’ (excepting those which might drive me crazy, such as the Grease cast singing Summer Lovin’, reserved for special nostalgic occasions only). Since then I have thought of many more songs that evoke summer for me. Here is my top ten, I’d love to hear your suggestions:
- Rollercoaster – Machine Gun Fellatio
Cruising round town with the windows down, shaking on down to the summertime sound
- Sun is Shining – Bob Marley vs Funkstar Deluxe
Sun is shining, weather is sweet, makes me want to move these dancing feet
- Rivers Run Dry – Hunters & Collectors
Takes me back to a very strange summer between school and Uni when I saw H&C play live at the ANU Refectory
- Bustin’ Surfboards – The Tornadoes
From the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. That whole soundtrack says ‘summer’ to me. Also, big guns.
- Blister in the Sun – Violent Femmes
Not really sure what any of the lyrics mean (although I am unreliably informed they refer to heroin withdrawal) but the drums are for summer, for sure.
- Fiesta – David McCormack
Whoa, uh-oh, you sure are pretty, you make me believe I’ve got some good left in me
Plus, he’s local talent from the Inner West.
- It’s Too Darn Hot – Ella Fitzgerald
Reminds me of my first summer in Syndey, sitting in the backyard with my feet in a bucket of cold water, watching the smoke from the bushfires cloud up the moon. Summer isn’t always that nice, is it?
- Weather With You – Crowded House
Many a coast trip has been whiled away listening to this
- Why Does The Sun Shine? – They Might Be Giants
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace
A little science to temper all that relaxing, and it has a kicking beat.
- California Gurls – Katy Perry
Sun-kissed skin so hot, will melt your popsicle
Not subtle, perhaps, but I included it to prove that all my picks don’t come from last century
